Finding a Herzing Clinical Preceptor in Delaware

AANP lists Delaware as a full practice state. Delaware NPs may assess, diagnose, order and interpret tests, and initiate and manage treatment, including prescribing, under the Delaware Board of Nursing. The Delaware Board of Nursing is the official source for nursing licensure, advanced practice requirements, public verification, renewal, and discipline in Delaware. Use its current record before spending weeks on a possible preceptor. A practice website or professional profile may omit a recent change in license status or population certification.

Board verification is a screening step, not Herzing approval. The clinical application generally requires the preceptor's CV and a signed agreement, and Herzing considers whether the clinician, site, patient mix, and supervision fit the course. Ask the site about student policies and credentialing before treating interest as a confirmed rotation.

New Castle County has the largest provider concentration around Wilmington, Newark, and Middletown. Dover, Smyrna, and Milford anchor Kent County. Sussex County searches can include Seaford, Georgetown, Lewes, Millsboro, and coastal communities, where primary care demand may be high but the number of possible preceptors is smaller.

Northern Delaware competes with students from the Philadelphia region, while southern placements may require more driving between communities. Because the state is small, a two-county plan can be realistic, but each site still needs to match the course rather than simply being within reach.

A physical placement needs a commute and schedule the student can sustain for the full course. A virtual option needs equally careful screening because the clinician, patient encounters, technology, privacy process, and supervision must all support the learning objectives. Searching by course fit first prevents a nearby but unusable site from consuming the approval window.

Herzing expects the student to participate actively in finding a preceptor and site. The school's Clinical Placement Advisor and master's-prepared Clinical Coordinator provide guidance, and an approved-site fallback list may support a stalled search. A willing clinician is then evaluated under Herzing's current academic and clinical requirements.

For eligible APRN students, the conditional Clinical Placement Pledge is a backstop rather than an automatic first step. Required tasks and deadlines must be completed, and the formal process must start at least two months before the clinical application deadline. The site and clinician still need to pass approval. Keeping the CV, agreement, outreach log, and dates organized helps prevent avoidable delay.

WHNP hours should be confirmed for that program rather than inferred from another track.

Online coursework still leads to an in-person, precepted practicum at a Herzing-approved site. Telehealth may contribute only when the program, course, site, state rules, and patient experience permit it.
