Finding a Herzing Clinical Preceptor in Florida

AANP classifies Florida as a restricted practice state. Most Florida nurse practitioners maintain a written protocol with a supervising physician. That protocol establishes delegated medical functions, prescribing, consultation, and other practice terms, so a clinic may need agreement from the NP, physician, and practice administration before accepting a student.

Florida also has an autonomous practice registration for qualified APRNs in defined primary care practice. It does not make every APRN in every specialty independent, and students should verify the clinician's actual status through the Department of Health rather than assuming the exception applies. Acute care and many psychiatric settings continue to operate through physician protocols.

Restriction does not prevent an effective Herzing rotation. It changes the decision path behind the site. A willing NP may still need internal authorization, and the student's course must match the clinician's population, specialty, and setting. The learner remains directly supervised no matter which practice route the preceptor uses.

The Florida Board of Nursing is the official source for nursing licensure, advanced practice requirements, public verification, renewal, and discipline in Florida. Use its current record before spending weeks on a possible preceptor. A practice website or professional profile may omit a recent change in license status or population certification.

Board verification is a screening step, not Herzing approval. The clinical application generally requires the preceptor's CV and a signed agreement, and Herzing considers whether the clinician, site, patient mix, and supervision fit the course. Ask the site about student policies and credentialing before treating interest as a confirmed rotation.

South Florida searches cover Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and surrounding communities. Tampa Bay, Sarasota, Orlando and the I-4 corridor, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Gainesville, Pensacola, Fort Myers, and Naples create other major markets. Each has a large provider base along with strong demand from nursing programs.

Florida's size makes regional focus essential. A student in Miami cannot treat an Orlando opportunity as local, and a hospital-based acute care search follows a different map from outpatient family or psychiatric care. Practices with supervising protocols may also involve several decision-makers, adding time even after the NP is interested.

A physical placement needs a commute and schedule the student can sustain for the full course. A virtual option needs equally careful screening because the clinician, patient encounters, technology, privacy process, and supervision must all support the learning objectives. Searching by course fit first prevents a nearby but unusable site from consuming the approval window.

Herzing encourages students to identify their own site and preceptor. A Clinical Placement Advisor and a master's-prepared Clinical Coordinator support the process, and an approved-site fallback list may offer leads if the student's search does not produce a workable option. Herzing reviews every proposed clinician and site against the current program and course.

The conditional APRN Clinical Placement Pledge functions as a placement backstop for an eligible student who completes the required steps, meets deadlines, and begins the formal process at least two months before the clinical application deadline. The site and preceptor must satisfy approval requirements. Starting early and documenting outreach protects the student's eligibility and gives review teams useful time.
