Finding a Utah Preceptor for Herzing NP Clinicals

AANP classifies Utah as a full practice state. Nurse practitioners provide evaluation, diagnosis, testing, and treatment under state licensing authority without a career-long physician supervision agreement defining ordinary NP practice. That makes independent and NP-led clinics useful additions to the search alongside larger systems.

Professional independence does not erase specialty boundaries. A family NP, psychiatric mental health NP, pediatric NP, and acute care NP bring different patient populations and clinical settings. Employer rules also matter. A clinician may have broad state authority while the practice limits students or requires central approval.

Herzing students remain supervised learners. The preceptor's autonomy and the student's approved scope are separate. Use full practice to broaden outreach, then evaluate the actual course fit, schedule, patient volume, and willingness to teach.

Utah nursing licensure is administered through the Division of Professional Licensing, often called DOPL. Its official nursing and APRN resources provide application guidance and credential lookup. Verify an active APRN license, relevant population focus, and any public status information before depending on a candidate.

Then compare the clinician's current practice with Herzing's preceptor requirements. Confirm certification, patient ages, clinical setting, schedule, and supervision capacity. Request a current CV early and ask whether the organization can sign the preceptor agreement and complete its onboarding within the target term.

Salt Lake City and the surrounding Wasatch Front contain the state's broadest mix of primary care, psychiatry, pediatrics, women's health, specialty medicine, and hospitals. Search beyond central Salt Lake through West Valley City, Murray, Sandy, Draper, and nearby communities. Ogden and Layton extend the northern corridor, while Provo and Orem anchor Utah County.

A practice in Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, Idaho, or Colorado introduces a different state location that should be reviewed before collecting documents.

Herzing's student-first model encourages students to identify a site and preceptor. A Clinical Placement Advisor and master's-prepared Clinical Coordinator support the clinical process, and an approved-site fallback list adds another resource. Once a clinician is interested, request the current CV, secure the signed preceptor agreement, and gather accurate site and schedule information.

The APRN Clinical Placement Pledge is a conditional backstop. Its conditions include completing required steps, meeting deadlines, beginning the formal placement process at least two months before the clinical application deadline, and proposing a site and preceptor that meet Herzing approval requirements. Utah sites may require their own health documentation, privacy training, background materials, credentialing, or organizational agreement. Run these tasks in parallel and identify one site contact who can answer paperwork questions. A clinician's yes is strongest when the practice can support it.

Primary care students may find continuity across Wasatch Front and regional clinics. AGACNP students often need larger acute settings with formal student review. PNP-PC and PMHNP students should confirm age ranges and consistent patient access, particularly for immersion work. Online coursework is paired with an in-person, precepted practicum at a Herzing-approved site. Map each course independently. A Utah practice that supports one population well may not meet a later course's acuity or age requirements.
