Practicum Placement for Herzing MSN Nursing Education Students
Last updated July 2026 · Reviewed against Herzing University's current NP program pages.
Every student on Herzing's nursing education track completes a final capstone practicum to demonstrate mastery as a nurse educator, and the onsite course is a clinical practicum with a mentor in an approved nursing education or staff development setting. That is a different search from an NP rotation, and the people who can supervise it are fewer than students expect.

What the education practicum actually requires
All students enrolled on the nursing education track are required to complete a final capstone practicum that exhibits mastery and expertise as a nurse educator. The onsite practicum course puts you in a clinical practicum with a mentor, in an approved nursing education or staff development setting.
Read the setting requirement carefully, because it is the constraint. It is not enough to find an experienced nurse willing to help. The work has to happen somewhere education is genuinely being delivered, and the person supervising you has to be doing that work themselves.
Mentor, not preceptor, and the difference matters
Herzing's own language for this course is mentor rather than preceptor, and that is not a cosmetic distinction. An NP preceptor supervises you seeing patients. An education mentor supervises you teaching, assessing and developing other nurses. Someone can be an outstanding clinician and still be the wrong supervisor for this practicum, because the competencies being assessed are educational rather than clinical.
What to confirm before you commit
That your mentor holds the credentials Herzing requires for the course, that their role genuinely involves nursing education or staff development, and that the site will be approved. Confirm all three with your programme before the term rather than after, because a mismatch here costs the practicum, not just the paperwork.
Where nursing education practicums actually happen
Hospital staff development
Clinical education and professional development departments are the most natural fit: orientation, competency assessment and continuing education are exactly the work the course assesses.
Nursing schools and programmes
Faculty-supervised placements in a nursing programme give you direct teaching experience, though capacity is limited and academic calendars are rigid.
Simulation centres
Simulation education is a strong fit for competency and assessment outcomes, and these centres are often more open to hosting than a classroom.
Your own employer
Frequently the best route if there is an educator or clinical development role in the organisation and that person is not your direct manager.
Why students stall here
The pool is genuinely small. A hospital may employ hundreds of nurses and only a handful of clinical educators, and those few are already supporting orientation for the whole organisation. Unlike a clinical rotation, where several practices in a city might work, there may be only two or three qualifying supervisors within a reasonable distance. That is a market problem rather than an effort problem, and it rewards starting early far more than it rewards persistence.
How we secure it
Where we stop
We source and secure the mentor and the site and we prepare the paperwork. Herzing approves the placement and your mentor signs off on your practicum. We are an independent service and cannot approve a placement or guarantee one.
Good to know
Can my manager be my mentor?
Generally not your direct manager. If the organisation has a separate clinical education or staff development role, that person is usually the right fit.
Does Herzing place me?
Herzing encourages students to find their own mentor and site and provides support, including stepping in when a student cannot secure a placement. The search still starts with you.
Can I teach in a classroom instead?
Academic placements exist but are limited by faculty capacity and term calendars. Staff development is usually the faster route to a qualifying setting.
How early should I start?
Earlier than for a clinical rotation, because the qualifying pool in any given city is small.
