Practicum Placement for Herzing MSN Leadership and Administration Students

Last updated July 2026 · Reviewed against Herzing University's current NP program pages.

Every student on Herzing's leadership track completes a final capstone practicum to demonstrate mastery as a nurse leader, and it runs with a mentor in an approved nursing leadership or administration setting. The supervisor you need is a nurse who runs something, which is a narrower group than it first sounds.

What the leadership practicum actually requires

All students enrolled on the nursing leadership track are required to complete a final capstone practicum that exhibits mastery and expertise as a nurse leader, completed with a mentor in an approved nursing leadership or administration setting.

The operative word is setting. The practicum assesses how you operate as a leader, so it has to sit somewhere leadership decisions are actually made, under someone who makes them. A senior clinician who does not manage, budget or set policy is not the right supervisor for this course, however experienced they are.

Who qualifies as a leadership mentor

In practice this means a nurse in a management or administrative role: a unit or department manager, a director of nursing, a chief nursing officer in a smaller organisation, a quality or operations lead. What they share is authority over how the work runs rather than only over the work itself.

The one to confirm early

Whether your intended mentor's role satisfies Herzing's criteria for this specific course, and whether the site will be approved. Leadership titles vary enormously between organisations, so a job title alone does not settle it. Ask the programme before you commit.

Where leadership practicums actually happen

Your own organisation

The most common and often the strongest route, because you already understand how the place runs. The mentor should be a leader other than your direct manager.

Nursing administration offices

Directors and CNO offices offer the broadest exposure to budgeting, staffing and policy, though their calendars are the least flexible.

Quality and operations

Quality improvement, risk and operations leads supervise measurable, project-shaped work that fits the capstone well.

Long-term care and community organisations

Often overlooked and frequently more willing to host than a large hospital, with genuine management responsibility to observe.

Why this one is easier to arrange than education, and harder than it looks

There are more nurse leaders than nurse educators, so the pool is larger. What makes it harder than it appears is bandwidth: a manager's willingness to supervise a student competes directly with staffing, budgets and their own reporting lines. The constraint is not finding a qualifying person but finding one with the time, and that is a question best asked months rather than weeks ahead.

How we secure it

Match the setting to the course. The practicum is assessed on a specific domain, so the setting is chosen against that, not against convenience.
Find a mentor who qualifies. Role, credentials and setting checked against what Herzing will approve, before a name reaches you.
Carry the paperwork. Site agreement and onboarding prepared and tracked so approval does not become the bottleneck.
Replace fast if it falls through. A withdrawn mentor restarts the approval, so it restarts immediately.

Where we stop

We source and secure the mentor and the site and we prepare the paperwork. Herzing approves the placement and your mentor signs off on your practicum. We are an independent service and cannot approve a placement or guarantee one.

Good to know

Can I use my own workplace?

Usually yes, and it is often the best option, provided the mentor is a leader other than your direct manager and the setting will be approved.

Does the mentor have to be a nurse?

The course is built around nursing leadership, so confirm with Herzing before considering a non-nursing administrator, however senior.

Does Herzing place me?

Herzing encourages students to source their own mentor and site and offers support, including stepping in when a student cannot secure a placement.

How early should I start?

Months ahead. The limit is a leader's available time, not the number of qualifying leaders.
